FIELD NOTES// Lake Tinaroo

LAKE TINAROO

17.1861° S, 145.5719° E

A rough ride of dirt and potholes, but perseverance is key.

Make it past the dirt and potholes and you discover a little sliver of heaven.

The water glistens in the sunlight. The lake stretching out before you. A lake filled with fish and surrounded by rainforest walks, birds and serenity.

Just a short walk from the lake, is a rainforest filled with shades of green. Trunks are covered in moss and fungi. Staghorn ferns are suspended from vines that twist and curl. Turn the corner and you stumble across gum blossoms bursting forth from tree trunks in shades of cream and chartreuse. The rainforest floor is littered with decaying leaves, remnants of ferns create lace baskets and you can hear small animals disappearing into the scrub.

Glittering lights suspended on the water as the sun begins to set. And that gentle lapping that lulls you to sleep.

NOTES

Smells like:

Subtle blossoms, earth, rainforest damp.

Sounds like:

Water lapping at the edge of the lake, wind through the trees, the ‘koo-whip’ of a bird. Plovers. Peewees.

Looks like:

Staghorn fern green, lace leaf skeletons in cream, gold and sepia – glittering along the forest floor. So many shades of green. Blossoms bursting out of tree trunks in cream, chartreuse, lime. Glittery sublight across the water. A creek in three shades of green – sage, khaki and olive.

Feels like:

When the sun is shining it feels like a sanctuary. A little pocket of heaven against the water.
